Call for Carols

Hello to all you beautiful people of Liahona!

December is here. Miraculously enough, Christmas is here too, just not yet. To get ready for it, we each do our part to prepare either our physical homes or those which dwell within ourselves for this special event bursting at the seams with decorations and symbolism. One thing we, the Digital Journalism Staff, would like to do in order to help enlighten this experience (which happens only once in the lifetime of something that only has a lifespan of one year) is receive from each of you your favorite Christmas Carol. To assist us, all you would do is comment to this post in reply to your favorite carol, or answer it on one of the many forms of Social Media. You are also invited to share why you enjoy listening to that song to help us collect a more personalized list of songs.

If you answer, we will take your comment as well as anything else related and declare it forth to the ends of the earth.

We do appreciate the time you use to help us, and are more than willing to return a favor. ;)

Digital Journalism Staff: November 2016 Newsletter

In our World today, many people have forgotten how to say, "Thank you." They feel entitled to all the things they receive, and think not upon the person who gave such things to them; it is because they find fault instead of love that we do live in these dangerous days. But, God has provided us with truths and moments that do help us forget the World and find peace.

November is a time to reflect upon our blessings, our talents, and all the things we have received from the hand of another. November is also important because it contains a perfect opportunity to show gratitude not only for the things we have been bestowed, but also to Him who gave those things to us. As we do show thanksgiving to the Brother who deserves it the most, we are then enabled to be better and do more with God's love always upon our shoulders.

Attached is a Newsletter wholly dedicated to helping you be inspired as to how you can be in service to another and have a loving Holiday. Join us this month as we each strive to be our best at Thanksgiving:

Halloween is full of surprises, including this: a Rafflecopter giveawayThis giveaway will reward you with the chance of being given a free Liahona T-Shirt if you but simply comply to the rules set. You are to like all the Halloween Costumes you admire, and do so by simply clicking the "Like" button. However, you are also meant to write a kind comment for the Costume you think is your favorite, and are only to comment on one, lest confusion arise and chaos ensue.
Do this--as well as other things that could increase your chance of winning the prize, outlined by the Rafflecopter--and you may find yourself staring inside a cardboard box, beholding the shirt you will never take off your back again. . . unless it is to wash it ;).

Digital Journalism Awareness

Digital Journalism is a mountain of opportunities.

In fact, many skills one would consider useful can be learned as one hikes the pathway of this grand adventure to the top with the accompaniment of simple participation and a drop of desire. Understanding the operation of various digital platforms, being able to conduct yourself in a manner that fully represents your ability to uphold a bestowed responsibility, and knowing how to work both efficiently and effectively with the members of your team are only the surface of this course's magnitude. From the course description of this class- outlined by its instructor Sister Jackson- it reads:

"At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Write a newsworthy article, titles, headings, and captions using Standard English conventions and basic organizational skills.
2) Demonstrate critical thinking and engage in meaningful class discussions.
3) Acquire new vocabulary through the study of course texts and exercises, and apply its usage within coursework as well as generally.
4) Read and edit their own as well as their peer's writing, both critically and analytically.
5) Gain understanding of self, texts, aesthetics, and the world through reading, class activities/discussions, and individual writing."

So, in simpler terms, Digital Journalism will prepare you for the impact of college, will place confidence in your communication with another, and will downright simply make you the bomb in any needed situation.

Having been a member of this course last year, and being the Managing Editor, I could state the things I have learned from being given that position and participating in Digital Journalism, but then it would be too long for even myself to write. All that must suffice, is that if you want to reach your highest potential in life, and if you want to find yourself dependable by those who ask for your assistance, then this course is one of the steps to reaching that point.

And it's never too late to start climbing.

Youth Conference 101

It's that time of year again; we only have 27 more days until youth conference! WOOHOO! The spots are being filled crazy fast so be sure to talk to the office about registering. If you have any questions about youth conference feel free to read this post. It will answer most of  frequently asked questions about YC.

(All the DE Students from YC 2015)

Where do I sign up?

The office sent around forms. If you didn't get the emails, just email liahonaoffice1@liahonaed.com. Fill out the forms and send them into the office. They'll then talk to you about how to pay for the conference.

How much does it cost?
$275

Where is youth conference?

It is held in the mountains, just past Sundance, at Aspen Grove. It is a gorgeous area, especially in October. Here are a few pictures...

What do you do at YC?

Have you ever been to EFY? Liahona YC is a lot like EFY. We have speakers, performers, good food, devotionals, free time, and a dance.  In the past we have heard from Hank Smith, John Bytheway, Brad Wilcox and other amazing speakers.

Here is a sample schedule from Liahona Youth Conference 2013...

What if I don't know anyone?

Let us tell you a little secret, most everyone doesn't know anyone on their first trip. :) You are not alone; it is totally okay! Everyone goes around meeting new people. It's a great opportunity to meet people from the chat or on camera.

Where do I sleep?

There are two huge cabins for guys and two more for the girls. We are usually divided by age so there's an older girl cabin and younger girl cabin. With the same situation for the guys. Here are some pictures and the general layout of the cabins from the Aspen Grove website.

What do I eat?
Monday night you need to eat dinner before you arrive or bring food for yourself. The kitchens aren't open so that the employees can go home and enjoy FHE. Every other meal we eat in the Cafeteria. It is cooked by the staff at Aspen Grove. In the past we have had pizza, mac-n-cheese, burgers, sandwiches, salad, pasta, and tacos. For breakfast we've had pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, french toast, and fruit. The menu changes every year.

How many people attend?
It varies from year to year but last year we had around 150 youth.

What if I can't come but really want to?
Every year there are DE and academy students who would like to attend but are unable. Brother Lloyd helps us film as many of the speakers as we can on Telenect. You can watch them live or recorded just like you would watch class. Sister Jackson will also be posting a lot of pictures on social media so you can stay up to date on the fun!

What else do I need to know?

Here is an excerpt from an email the office sent out a week before a previous YC. It has a lot of information on packing that might be helpful.

What if I have more questions that aren't mentioned here?

Feel free to send the student council an email! We will be happy to answer any of your questions and if we don't know the answer we will find someone who does!
